Size-dependent oxygen-related electronic states in silicon nanocrystals

چکیده
Silicon nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 were isolated with a selective etching procedure, and the isolated nanocrystals’ excitonic emission energy was studied during controlled oxidation. Nanocrystals having initial diameters, d0, of ,2.9–3.4 nm showed a photoluminescence sPLd blueshift upon oxidatively induced size reduction, as expected from models of quantum confinement. Oxidation of smaller Si nanocrystals sd0,2.5–2.8 nmd also initially resulted in a PL blueshift, but a redshift in the PL was then observed after growth of ,0.3 monolayers of native oxide. This decrease in excitonic emission energy during oxidation is consistent with the theoretically predicted formation of an oxygen-related excitonic recombination state. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Pseudo-direct bandgap transitions in silicon nanocrystals: effects on optoelectronics and thermoelectrics.
While silicon nanostructures are extensively used in electronics, the indirect bandgap of silicon poses challenges for optoelectronic applications like photovoltaics and light emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, we show that size-dependent pseudo-direct bandgap transitions in silicon nanocrystals dominate the interactions between (photoexcited) charge carriers and phonons, and hence the optoelectroni...

It is very interesting that magic electron affection promotes growth of nanocrystals due to nanoscale characteristics of electronic de Broglie wave which produces resonance to transfer energy to atoms. In our experiment, it was observed that silicon nanocrystals rapidly grow with irradiation of electron beam on amorphous silicon film prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and silicon nanocr...

Luminescent silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) have attracted tremendous research interest. Their size dependent photoluminescence (PL) shows great promise in various optoelectronic and biomedical applications and devices. However, it remains unclear why the exciton emission is limited to energy below 2.1 eV, no matter how small the nanocrystal is. Here we interpret a nanosecond transient yellow emi...
